Opening Bite - If Necessary

If you need to open the bite, use your own technique but if you are not sure, follow this simple, quick and accurate technique.

Deprogram your patient by having the patient bite on a cotton roll for a few minutes or by having the patient open and close his/her mouth six to seven times.

Once the patient is deprogramed, use the VDO gauge (Conmetior.com) to find the patient’s correct VDO.  This gauge will help you find the patient’s VDO in seconds.

Once you have recorded the VDO on the gauge, lock the small screw in the back of the handle to safely capture the patient’s VDO.

Utilizing your leaf gauge, add or subtract enough thickness to match the opening recorded by the VDO gauge.

To lock the patient in this new position, apply quick set bite material to the posterior areas and let it set.

Once the bite material has set, remove the leaf gauge from the patient’s mouth but leave the posterior bites in place.

Add bite material in the anterior area and connect to the posterior bites.

Verify that your findings are accurate.

The gauge does not replace your own skills, experience and knowledge.  It does, however, help you acquire the proper VDO quickly. You should still use your knowledge to verify that the VDO you have acquired is accurate.
